Hawkins attended South Broward High School in Hollywood, Florida, where he quickly made a name for himself on the football field. Standing 6’6″ and weighing 269 pounds, his imposing presence was matched by his athleticism and intelligence. He earned All-State honors and was a second-team high school All-American in 1983. Beyond his athletic prowess, Hawkins was also an academic standout, graduating with a 3.85 GPA, the highest on his football team.

Hawkins chose to continue his football career at the University of Miami, where he became a cornerstone of the Hurricanes’ defense. After redshirting in 1984, he became a three-year starter at defensive end. His college career was marked by consistent excellence:

• 1986: 62 tackles (10 for loss), 7 sacks
• 1987: 84 tackles (14 for loss), 6.5 sacks
• 1988: 67 tackles (18 for loss), 7.5 sacks

In 1988, Hawkins was honored as a first-team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation and the AFCA, and a second-team All-American by the AP, UPI, and Sporting News. He was also a finalist for the Lombardi Award, which recognizes the nation’s top lineman. Under the guidance of head coach Jimmy Johnson, Hawkins helped lead the Hurricanes to a national championship in 1987, culminating in a 20–14 victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.

Following his successful college career, Hawkins was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft, 21st overall. He made an immediate impact, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Over his four-season career with the Rams, Hawkins played in 42 games, recording 5 sacks and 39 tackles. Unfortunately, his promising career was cut short due to knee injuries, leading to his retirement after the 1992 season.

After retiring from professional football, Hawkins pursued a career in law. He graduated from the University of Florida School of Law, completing his degree a semester early. During his time at UF Law, he participated in a study abroad program in Montpellier, France, focusing on international financial crimes.

Hawkins has had a distinguished legal career, serving as an Assistant State Attorney in Palm Beach County from 1998 to 2002. He later founded Hawkins & Gordon, PL, and currently operates his own practice, Bill Hawkins Law, PL. In addition to his legal work, he is a certified real estate instructor and broker in Florida.

Beyond his professional achievements, Hawkins has remained committed to community service. He has been involved with the ARC Martin County, served as a Deacon and Moderator at the First Presbyterian Church of Tequesta, and is currently serving as an Assistant Scout Master and Committee Secretary for Boy Scout Troop 711. His dedication to service reflects the values instilled in him during his time at the University of Miami.
