The 2024–25 season of the Kentucky-Louisville sports rivalry, known as the Battle of the Bluegrass, was marked by two significant reversals in form—one in men’s basketball and another in football—that reshaped the competitive landscape between these two storied programs.
In December 2024, the Kentucky Wildcats delivered a commanding performance against the Louisville Cardinals in men’s basketball. Under first-year head coach Mark Pope, Kentucky secured a 93–85 victory at Rupp Arena, extending their home winning streak against Louisville to eight games. The game was highlighted by a historic performance from graduate guard Lamont Butler, who scored a career-high 33 points on a perfect 10-of-10 shooting, including six three-pointers. This achievement placed him among an elite group of players in Kentucky basketball history.
Despite strong individual efforts from Louisville’s Chucky Hepburn and Terrence Edwards Jr., who combined for 49 points, the Cardinals struggled defensively, allowing Kentucky to shoot 58.2% from the field. Injuries and foul troubles further hampered Louisville’s depth, contributing to their third consecutive loss to Kentucky.
This game not only showcased Kentucky’s offensive prowess but also marked a significant moment in the rivalry, with Coach Pope’s debut season beginning with a decisive win over Louisville.
In contrast to their basketball performance, Louisville’s football team experienced a resurgence in the 2024 season. After five consecutive losses to Kentucky, the Cardinals broke their streak with a dominant 38–14 victory over the Wildcats in the Governor’s Cup. This win was particularly sweet for Louisville, as it ended Kentucky’s four-year winning streak in the series and was their first win over the Wildcats since 2018.
Louisville’s offense, led by quarterback Jack Plummer, was efficient and explosive, while their defense effectively contained Kentucky’s rushing attack. The victory not only boosted Louisville’s morale but also signaled a shift in the balance of power in Kentucky college football.
