Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli’s recent decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal has sparked a wave of reactions from fans, analysts, and former teammates. Once considered a promising talent, Angeli’s departure marks a significant shift in the Fighting Irish’s quarterback landscape.

Steve Angeli, a four-star recruit from New Jersey, joined Notre Dame in 2022 Over his three seasons, he appeared in 21 games, starting one—the 2023 Sun Bowl against Oregon State, where he led the team to a decisive 40–8 victoryIn that game, Angeli completed 34 of 44 passes for 504 yards and seven touchdowns, showcasing his potential search1Despite this standout performance, Angeli remained a backup in 2024, primarily serving as a relief option behind starter Riley LeonardHis limited playing time—completing 24 of 36 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns—did not provide ample opportunity to challenge for the starting role.

Angeli’s decision to enter the transfer portal came after a spring quarterback competition that included redshirt freshman CJ Carr and sophomore Kenny Minche. With only one year of eligibility remaining, Angeli likely recognized the slim chances of securing the starting position and opted to explore opportunities elsewhere

With Angeli’s departure, Notre Dame’s quarterback depth chart is in fu. J Carr, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, and Kenny Minchey are now the primary contenders for the starting rl. The team may also consider adding a transfer quarterback to bolster competition and depth.

As the 2025 season approaches, the Fighting Irish will need to address the quarterback situation promptly to ensure a smooth transition and maintain competitiveness in the college football landscpe.
