Kenyan basketball sensation Madina Okot has officially committed to the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, joining head coach Dawn Staley’s powerhouse women’s basketball program. Madina Okot’s basketball journey began in Kenya, where she initially played volleyball at Bishop Sulumeti High School. Her transition to basketball was facilitated by Kaya Tiwi High School, where she honed her skills and quickly gained recognition. She further developed her game at Zetech University, playing for the Zetech Sparks in the Kenyan Women’s Premier League. Her standout performances caught the attention of international scouts, leading to her selection for the Kenyan national 3×3 team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Despite initial nerves, Okot emerged as the best player on the Kenyan team, showcasing her potential on a global stage.
In April 2024, after overcoming multiple visa rejections, Okot secured a scholarship to play for the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the NCAA Southeastern Conference (SEC). In her freshman season, she started all 34 games, averaging 11.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. Notably, she recorded 11 double-doubles, including a standout performance against Vanderbilt with 21 points and 23 rebounds.
