The Gamecocks defeat Mississippi State to open the SEC Tournament.

The South Carolina Gamecocks men’s basketball team secured a thrilling 93–89 overtime victory over Mississippi State on March 9, 2024, in Starkville, Mississippi. This win marked a significant milestone for the program, setting a new record for regular-season victories with 25 and tying the 1996–97 SEC Championship team for the most SEC road wins in school history.

Graduate forward B.J. Mack led the Gamecocks with 25 points, including seven crucial points in overtime. Freshman forward Collin Murray-Boyles contributed 19 points on an impressive 9-of-10 shooting, along with eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals, showcasing his all-around performance. Guard Meechie Johnson added 16 points, while Zachary Davis chipped in 13 points, combining for 73 of the team’s 93 points.

The game was closely contested, with Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard scoring 28 points to lead the Bulldogs. The Gamecocks held a slim 38–37 lead at halftime and maintained a narrow advantage throughout the second half. In the final seconds of regulation, Hubbard tied the game with two free throws, but Mack responded with two of his own, giving South Carolina a 77–75 lead. Mississippi State’s Dashawn Davis then made two free throws to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Gamecocks shot a perfect 4-for-5 from the field and made all six of their free throw attempts, with Mack and Johnson each sinking two free throws in the final moments to secure the win. This victory propelled South Carolina to a 25–6 overall record and a 13–5 mark in SEC play, finishing tied for second place in the conference.

Head coach Lamont Paris expressed pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing their resilience and determination throughout the season. The Gamecocks’ success in this game and throughout the regular season set a strong foundation as they prepared for the upcoming SEC Tournament in Nashville.

This victory not only highlighted the team’s talent and depth but also underscored their growth and potential as they entered postseason play. With a strong finish to the regular season, the Gamecocks aimed to carry their momentum into the SEC Tournament and beyond.
