Columbia, SC – After initial reluctance from the honoree, the long-anticipated dedication of “Ray Tanner Field” will take place this Saturday in a special ceremony at Founders Park. The field, named in honor of legendary South Carolina baseball coach and current athletic director Ray Tanner, will serve as a lasting tribute to his contributions to the university and the Gamecocks baseball program.
A Reluctant Honoree
Despite his immense impact on the University of South Carolina’s athletics, Ray Tanner was initially hesitant about having a field named after him. Known for his humility and team-first mentality, Tanner expressed reservations about the focus being placed on him rather than the players and coaches who contributed to the program’s success.
“Coach Tanner has never been one to seek the spotlight,” said Chad Holbrook, a former assistant and head coach who worked closely with Tanner. “He always wanted the attention on the team, the university, and the fans. But there comes a time when a person’s contributions are simply too great to ignore.”
After much persuasion from university officials, alumni, and former players, Tanner ultimately gave his blessing, recognizing that the dedication was not just about him but about the legacy of South Carolina baseball.
A Legacy of Excellence
Ray Tanner served as the head coach of the Gamecocks baseball team from 1997 to 2012, leading the team to unprecedented success, including back-to-back national championships in 2010 and 2011. Under his leadership, South Carolina became a powerhouse in college baseball, making six College World Series appearances and winning numerous conference titles.
Tanner’s emphasis on discipline, teamwork, and player development shaped generations of student-athletes, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in Major League Baseball and other professional avenues. His impact extends beyond the baseball diamond, as he has been serving as the university’s athletic director since 2012, overseeing significant advancements in multiple sports programs.
“Coach Tanner’s influence is immeasurable,” said former Gamecocks pitcher Michael Roth. “He made us better players, but more importantly, he made us better people. His leadership, integrity, and passion for the game changed all of our lives.”
The Dedication Ceremony
The official dedication ceremony for Ray Tanner Field is set for Saturday at 1:00 p.m., just before the Gamecocks’ first home game of the season. University President Dr. Michael Amiridis, current head baseball coach Mark Kingston, and several former players will be in attendance to celebrate the occasion.
The event will feature speeches from colleagues and former players, a video tribute highlighting Tanner’s coaching career, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. A special banner displaying “Ray Tanner Field” will also be revealed along the outfield wall.
Community and Alumni Support
The movement to name the field after Tanner was driven by a broad coalition of university supporters, alumni, and fans who wanted to see his legacy permanently enshrined at Founders Park.
