Former Auburn football coach deemed ‘real’ reason Nick Saban was hired by Alabama

Tommy Tuberville, the former head coach of Auburn, is now more well-known for his political views than for his work as a college football coach. Regretfully, Tuberville’s present views may be affecting his eligibility to be inducted into Atlanta’s College Football Hall of Fame.

Columnist Joseph Goodman of AL.com wrote an opinion post titled “Is Tommy Tuberville getting what he deserves?” with that as its main topic.

Goodman acknowledges the influence of the former Auburn coach on football in the state of Alabama, but he does not support Tuberville’s recent remarks on the flames in California.

According to Goodman, Tuberville was the “real” reason Alabama hired Nick Saban, who had just retired, in 2007.

“Tubs, Nick Saban, and Urban Meyer were on the most recent ballot. Tubs was not elected, but Saban and Meyer were. Just? “Not really,” wrote Goodman.

In addition to Saban and Meyer, Tuberville was excellent.

In the end, Tuberville had a 4-3 record versus Saban and a 2-1 record against Meyer. When it comes to those two titans, no other coach can boast of winning records.

“The true reason Alabama chose Saban was because of Tubs. Tuberville defeated Florida in consecutive years at Auburn and never lost to Meyer.

Bringing AU into the twenty-first century and creating a defensive identity for the club that persisted until the Bryan Harsin years were two aspects of Tuberville’s coaching legacy on the Plains. Whatever one’s opinion of his divisive political views, there is no denying what he accomplished at Auburn.

Given that Donald Trump is expected to retake president, Tuberville is expected to remain a media staple. Since Trump was elected to the US Senate in 2020, Tuberville has been closely associated with him.

However, given Saban’s own coaching legacy, Tuberville will have had an incalculable impact on football in the Yellowhammer State even after he is no longer generating headlines.
