Once they have their head coach under contract, whether McCarthy or someone else, they must shift their attention to the team. There are various areas of concern, including running back, defensive tackle, wide receiver, and offensive line.
David Howman from Blogging The Boys is asking Dallas to seek an upgrade at tight end after Jake Ferguson’s miserable season. Ferguson, a breakout performer in 2023, saw his numbers decline in 2024.
The third-year tight end finished with 494 yards and 59 receptions. He watched his yards per catch dip to 8.4 and failed to reach the end zone for the first time in his career.
Ferguson’s statistics were disturbing, according to Howman. He claims that “Ferguson was not only the least efficient tight end in the league this year, but the least efficient tight end in NFL history” when utilizing the Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement measure.
Ferguson also become sloppy in his play. He had never fumbled the ball before the season, but he did four times this year, losing two of them,” Howman noted. “Despite missing three games, he led all skill players with nine penalties.
“The Cowboys were banking on him having another strong year, but Ferguson turned sharply in the wrong direction.”
Howman accurately points out that injuries and poor quarterback play may have contributed to Ferguson’s performance. The front office must now evaluate whether he can return to form if these two circumstances improve.
