Patriots owner Robert Kraft explains why he fired Jerod Mayo, saying, “This whole situation is on me.”
The day after the Patriots fired Jerod Mayo, there was no finger-pointing in New England.
Owner Robert Kraft told the media on Monday, “I am responsible for this entire situation.” “Because I put Jerod in an unworkable scenario, I feel awful for him. I am confident that he has all the resources necessary to succeed in this league as a head coach. All he needed was more time before accepting the position. I’m a fan of this team first and foremost. I now need to find a coach who can lead us back to the postseason and, ideally, titles.
Kraft made the move as a result of the team’s 4-13 record and, more importantly, their season-long decline. According to Kraft, the circumstances changed, and he debated the choice for a month. It was compounded by Kraft’s personal relationship with Mayo, a Patriots player who served as Bill Belichick’s assistant coach before being selected as his successor.
When Kraft said, “I felt guilty I put him in that position,” “But we’re moving on.”
Prior to the team’s 23-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, which eliminated them from the running for the first overall pick in the draft, Kraft failed to notify Mayo.
The next head coach will take over a roster that has openings at every position and will need to continue developing quarterback Drake Maye, who was selected third overall in the previous year’s draft.
Kraft stated that the Patriots intend to hire Mayo’s replacement quickly and have already asked to talk with potential candidates. According to several sources, the team requested a meeting with Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.
After Belichick won six Super Bowls and coached the team for 24 seasons, Mayo left after one season.
According to Kraft, general manager Eliot Wolf and his team will remain.
