Michigan football is rebuilding its defensive line via the transfer portal after realizing it is losing a lot of depth.
According to rumors, 6-foot-2, 315-pound defensive tackle Tre Williams, who has played for Clemson for the last five years, will spend the upcoming season in Ann Arbor, his final season of eligibility.
In 14 games this season, Williams collected 14 tackles, three for loss, and two sacks. He is listed as the 10th defensive lineman and the 104th player overall in the country by the 247 Sports composite rankings.
During his time at Clemson, Williams, a native of St. John’s in Washington, D.C., collected 42 tackles, 10 for loss, four sacks, and three fumble recoveries.
The move gives defensive coordinator Wink Martindale’s front-line unit much-needed depth after losing the team’s most productive edge rusher, projected Day 2 pick Josaiah Stewart, and two projected first-round NFL selections, Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant.
Despite losing as much as any other defensive line in the nation, U-M’s defensive line, led by defensive line coach Lou Esposito, had the best unit on the team in 2024. Proven players Rayshaun Benny and Derick Moore are back.
Williams is a plus because 247 Sports composite rankings put him as the 94th best prospect in the 2020 recruiting class. Additionally, it is the second consecutive day that the Wolverines have added a transfer following the addition of Alabama running back Justice Haynes on Friday.
Nine transfers are now on their way to the Wolverines, and Yale receiver David Pantelis is among those who will be visiting Ann Arbor this weekend.
