The coordinator of the Tennessee Volunteers is reportedly of interest to the Clemson Tigers.

The goal of the Clemson Tigers’ offseason is to improve on their 2024 campaign, which was a huge success.

The Tigers had a strong season in 2023 after a disappointing season by their standards. On their path to an ACC title, Clemson won 10 games under the leadership of their rising star quarterback, Cade Klubnik.

They were a squad on the rise, even though they might have lost in the College Football Playoffs’ opening round.

The team’s outstanding offensive performance was a major factor in their success. Throughout the season, the unit seemed to get better and better.

The passing offense ended the season as one of the finest in the nation, despite Phil Mafah’s injuries, which hindered their ground game.

Regretfully, the Tigers’ defense had a difficult 2024 season. According to reports, Clemson has moved on from defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin, most likely as a result of those difficulties. In order to strengthen the unit for the upcoming season, Dabo Swinney is currently in a race to recruit a replacement.

Tim Banks, the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Volunteers, may be a possibility to replace Goodwin with the Tigers, according to a recent article by Will Vandervort of the Clemson Insider.

“Under Banks, Tennessee had one of the best defensive teams in the nation this past season. In terms of scoring defense (16.1 points per game), total defense (293.2 yards per game), and rushing defense (103.9), the Volunteers came in sixth place nationwide.

Given the high expectations for the program in 2025, Swinney appears eager to appoint an experienced coordinator to head the unit. The Volunteers’ Banks certainly matched that description.

The 53-year-old has risen through the collegiate football ranks as a defensive coordinator at three separate schools. He has served as Tennessee’s DC since 2021.

Last season, the Volunteers’ defense was among the best in the nation when he was in charge. The most obvious shortcoming for Clemson this past season was their ranking of sixth in 2024 in terms of running yards per attempt.

The fact that Banks is placed in the top 10 in numerous defensive categories shows what kind of coach he is. He has a wealth of experience and might be a great choice to take Goodwin’s place.

Swinney will need to persuade the 53-year-old that he may be the missing component for the Tigers to win a National Championship in 2025, though, since the Volunteers are a formidable program in their own right.

It might be a fantastic chance for Banks to win a title if the money is appropriate.
