Over the years, UGA football fans have come to expect many former Georgia football players to have exceptional NFL seasons. But when a player achieves notable success in their first season at the next level, it is especially unexpected.
But that’s just what’s happening with Ladd McConkey, a wide receiver with the Los Angeles Chargers, who broke several franchise records in Saturday’s 40-7 victory over the New England Patriots.
Two Franchise Records
Despite his stellar play throughout the season, Ladd McConkey’s performance on Saturday may have been his greatest to date with the Chargers. McConkey caught eight passes for 94 yards and two scores during the Chargers’ victory. much though his performance is noteworthy in and of itself, his accomplishment is made much more remarkable by the two franchise records he set throughout the game.
In addition to setting franchise records for a rookie with the Los Angeles Chargers, this game increased McConkey’s season total of 77 receptions and 1,054 receiving yards.
Although Georgia supporters, who have long acknowledged McConkey’s extraordinary talent, may not have been surprised by this accomplishment, the rest of the football community was undoubtedly taken aback. McConkey was regarded as one of the most underappreciated rookies going into the season. But that view has now shifted, and his extraordinary skills are now generally accepted.
The Chargers’ victory guaranteed a postseason berth, so McConkey’s season is far from done. With the Kansas City Chiefs winning the division, the team will receive one of the three AFC Wild Card slots. The Chargers were only 5 wins previous season, but McConkey has been instrumental in turning them into a postseason contender.
With one more game in the regular season and the playoffs coming up, McConkey has a chance to improve his record to the point where it will be very difficult for anybody to beat it for a very long time.
