Landry Jones, a former quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners, is joining Heupel as an offensive analyst, according to VolQuest. As OU’s all-time passing leader with 16,646 yards to his name (and No. 1 in Big 12 history), Jones is no stranger to success at the collegiate level. With 12,292, Baker Mayfield comes in at number two on the list.

Jones fills the vacuum left by McKenzie Milton, who departed Knoxville to join the UCF staff; it’s a reunion for Milton with Scott Frost down in Florida, as reporter Brett Hubbs pointed out in his article. Heupel and Jones, who were close while working together in Norman, are also getting back together.
This is Jones’s first coaching position. He played for the Steelers, Jaguars, and Raiders during his seven seasons in the NFL after his playing days at Oklahoma. After that, he briefly played for the Dallas Renegades in the XFL.
After leading the Vols to a 10-win season in 2024, Iamaleava is coming off a successful year. Even though he is excellent, he still needs to improve on a few things before he can go on. Someone like Jones can step in and assist the child in that situation. Although it is still unknown how Jones will fare in Knoxville, this seems like a low-risk move that might greatly benefit Heupel.
