Enzo Fernandez: From Setback to Stardom – The Driving Force Behind Chelsea’s Winning Streak

Enzo Fernandez has emerged as one of Chelsea’s standout players in recent weeks, proving why he’s considered a leader under manager Enzo Maresca. With three goals and four assists in his last six Premier League games, Fernandez has been crucial in helping Chelsea climb the table, now just two points behind league leaders Liverpool.

However, Fernandez is more focused on team success than personal stats. “I’m not too big on statistics,” he told Sky Sports. “Of course, I like to score and assist, but the priority is always the team and what the manager wants. If the team wins, I go home happier than if I’ve scored or assisted.”

Chelsea’s current eight-game winning streak is a testament to their collective effort, with Fernandez playing a key role. His recent performances mark a dramatic turnaround for the Argentine midfielder, who was dropped from the starting lineup in October.

Since joining Chelsea for £107m from Benfica, Fernandez has had to adapt to various challenges, including a new attacking role in Maresca’s system. Previously used as a deep-lying midfielder, he now operates closer to the opposition’s goal.

“I will always do whatever the coach asks,” Fernandez explained. “Right now, I’m playing closer to the box, which gives me opportunities to score or assist. I like the position a lot.”

This shift has unlocked Fernandez’s creative potential, with his vision and passing helping Chelsea break down defenses. At the same time, he hasn’t neglected his defensive duties, working alongside Moises Caicedo to protect the team’s backline.

“It’s an offensive position when attacking, but I also have to help defend alongside Moi to close spaces,” he said.

Maresca initially dropped Fernandez for Romeo Lavia, citing a need for more physicality. Instead of taking it negatively, Fernandez used his time out of the squad to improve his fitness and intensity. Tracking data now shows he’s running further and sprinting more than ever.

“It’s a very demanding role, especially in the Premier League, where the football is more direct. I’ve worked a lot to be at the right physical level, and I’m really happy with that side of my game,” he said.

“I’m very happy with how things are going,” Fernandez concluded. “But I’ll keep working to help my teammates and the team. That’s what matters most.”
