Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has strongly advised Arsenal against pursuing Manchester United star Marcus Rashford. The 26-year-old winger has hinted at a desire for a fresh start, but Carragher believes he wouldn’t add value to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
In a recent interview with journalist Henry Winter, Rashford expressed his openness to a new challenge while emphasizing that he doesn’t want to damage his relationship with his boyhood club. This revelation has sparked speculation about his future, with several top clubs reportedly interested in a potential January move.
Arsenal was previously linked to Rashford during the summer transfer window, but no deal materialized. Now, with the player seemingly open to the idea, the Gunners might consider reigniting their interest. However, Carragher has urged them to think twice.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, hosted by Sky Bet, Carragher was adamant that Rashford would not be an upgrade for Arsenal. When asked by Gary Neville if the Manchester United forward could improve Arsenal’s squad, Carragher’s response was clear:
“Rashford? No. Oh my god, he had a four-month spell under Erik ten Hag when United were on fire. He’s been a very good player for United and a very good Premier League player, but he’s not [Mohamed] Salah, [Sadio] Mane, or [Bukayo] Saka.”
Carragher questioned why Rashford, who has struggled to cement his place in Manchester United’s starting lineup and isn’t currently part of England’s squad, is being linked with elite European clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and PSG.
“Am I missing something?” Carragher asked. “He can’t get in the Manchester United team, and he’s not even in the England squad.”
So far this season, Rashford has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 24 appearances. However, this tally includes a standout performance against League One side Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, where he managed two goals and an assist.
While Rashford has shown flashes of brilliance, his inconsistency raises doubts about whether he’s the right fit for a team like Arsenal, which is building towards long-term success under Arteta.
With the January transfer window approaching, Arsenal must carefully evaluate their options. Carragher’s comments serve as a warning to Arteta and his team that splashing out on a player like Rashford might not align with their ambitions.
