Gabriel Jesus Reveals His Words to Martin Odegaard After Hat-Trick Heroics Against Crystal Palace

Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus stole the spotlight in their 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday, December 18. Despite trailing early, Arsenal came back strong in the second half, thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Jesus. After the game, the Brazilian opened up about the key tactical advice he gave to captain Martin Odegaard, which helped turn the game in Arsenal’s favor.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Gabriel Jesus explained how he encouraged Odegaard to use his incredible passing ability to break Crystal Palace’s defense.
“During the game, I told Martin, ‘I know your qualities. I’ll keep making runs behind the defenders. You don’t need to look for me; I’ll be there,’” Jesus said. “He listened and delivered two perfect balls that allowed me to score. The quality Martin has is amazing, and when he plays those passes, it’s easier for me to finish.”
Jesus praised the entire team’s second-half effort, highlighting their improved passing and movement compared to the first half:
“The first half wasn’t our best, but in the second half, we kept the ball better, created more chances, and executed our plan. Everyone gave their best today, and in the end, we got the job done.”
Heading into the match, Jesus faced pressure to deliver, having scored just once this season. But with his daughter accompanying him onto the pitch, he found the inspiration he needed.
“It’s a special moment for me,” Jesus shared. “I felt the pressure to score today, but walking onto the pitch with my daughter gave me energy and joy. I’m happy I could dedicate my goals to my family and another baby we’re expecting.”
Crystal Palace took an early lead through Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 4th minute, but Arsenal responded with a dominant second half. Gabriel Jesus netted three goals (54’, 73’, 81’) to turn the game around, while Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard provided key assists. Although former Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah scored a late goal for Crystal Palace in the 85th minute, it wasn’t enough to stop the Gunners from advancing to the semifinals.
