“Jack is a generational talent, but he is wasting at Man City. It’s harsh to say, but Pep isn’t using him in the right way. Pep is a genius, no doubt about that, But even the best managers can make mistakes. He needs to play Jack in his rightful position. If Pep can make that change, I think we’ll see a different monster (player).”

Former Aston Villa star Shay Given criticizes Pep Guardiola's tactics, claiming Jack Grealish is being wasted in the wrong position at Manchester City.

Shay Given criticizes Pep Guardiola for misusing Jack Grealish at Manchester City.
Former Aston Villa and Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given has voiced his concerns about Pep Guardiola’s handling of Jack Grealish since the player’s arrival at the Etihad. Given, who played alongside Grealish at Villa, believes the England international’s talents are being wasted in Guardiola’s system, especially with the winger playing out of position.

In a passionate critique during his recent appearance on the Monday Night Club podcast, Given didn’t hold back as he discussed City’s current struggles, Grealish’s role in the team, and the club’s recruitment decisions.

Grealish, who joined Manchester City in a £100 million move from Aston Villa in 2021, was expected to become a key player for the Premier League champions. However, according to Given, Guardiola’s decision to use him predominantly on the left wing has limited his impact.

“I know I’m biased because I played with Jack at Villa,” Given admitted. “But he’s playing out of position. He’s been stuck on the left wing since the day he joined Man City. It’s like watching a mannequin out there. He barely gets to influence the game, and I feel sorry for him.”

Given emphasized that Grealish thrives in a central role, where he can dictate play and unlock defenses. He recalled watching Grealish play for England in a central position, where he impressed with his creativity and control.

“When he played centrally for England, he was monumental,” Given continued. “Jack is a generational talent, but he’s going to waste at Man City. It’s harsh to say, but Pep isn’t using him in the right way.”

Since joining City, Grealish’s statistics have been underwhelming. This season, he has recorded just two assists in 13 appearances across all competitions. In the Premier League, he has only one assist in nine games. Given believes that Grealish’s potential is being stifled by Guardiola’s tactical setup, which often isolates him on the wing and limits his influence.

“It’s frustrating to watch,” Given said. “Jack’s not the kind of player who just hugs the touchline and waits for the ball. He needs to be involved, pulling the strings in the middle of the park.”

Despite his criticism, Given acknowledged Guardiola’s success and the trophies Grealish has won at City. However, he urged the manager to reconsider how he uses Grealish to get the best out of him.

“Pep is a genius, no doubt about that,” Given said. “But even the best managers can make mistakes. Jack needs to play centrally. If Pep can make that change, I think we’ll see a different player.”

Grealish remains a key part of Guardiola’s squad, but his future role at the club is uncertain. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if Guardiola adjusts his tactics to unleash Grealish’s full potential.
