"Frank Lampard Made Me Leave Chelsea – Now I’m Waiting for Enzo Maresca"

Fikayo Tomori, the former Chelsea defender, has shared how challenging it was to deal with limited game time at Stamford Bridge before moving to AC Milan. The 26-year-old joined the Italian club permanently in January 2022 for £24 million, following a successful loan spell during the 2020/21 season. Since then, he has thrived in Serie A, making over 155 appearances and helping Milan win the league title in 2022. Despite his success abroad, Tomori admits his time at Chelsea was tough but has no regrets about leaving.
Tomori’s time at Chelsea took a difficult turn under Frank Lampard. After breaking into the team during Lampard’s first season, he found himself sidelined in the second. Reflecting on those days, Tomori said:
“It was a difficult time when I wasn’t playing. The opportunity came up with Milan, and it just kind of happened. It worked out very well. It all fell into place.”
Feeling stuck and eager for a fresh start, Tomori took the chance to join Milan, a move that changed the trajectory of his career.
Tomori admitted he was initially surprised by Milan’s interest. What convinced him to make the move was a Zoom call with Paolo Maldini, the legendary defender and AC Milan’s technical director.
“When I first found out about it, I was shocked. Speaking to Maldini made me realize how big the club is. I was on a Zoom call just looking at him! Going to the museum and seeing the club’s history confirmed it for me.”
He also highlighted the benefits of playing outside England, saying:
“Outside of the Premier League, you can build a career, learn a new culture, and a new way of playing football. It’s definitely a positive, and more players are doing it now.”
Despite his strong performances in Italy, Tomori has often been overlooked by England managers. His last appearance for the national team came in a 2-0 win over Malta in November 2023. However, with Thomas Tuchel now in charge of England, Tomori remains hopeful.
“I try not to think about it too much. I focus on what I’m doing here. If I keep performing well, the call will come. I’d love to play in a major tournament like the World Cup or Euros. It’s still my goal.”
Looking back, Tomori believes leaving Chelsea was the right decision, despite the challenges. His success at Milan and personal growth have justified the move.
“It was tough not playing, but everything worked out. I have no regrets about leaving. Playing for Milan has been a great experience.”
As Tomori continues to shine in Italy, he remains determined to earn his place in the England squad and fulfill his dream of playing in major international tournaments.
