Ryan Gravenberch has had an impressive start to life at Liverpool, but not everyone seems willing to heap praise on the Dutch midfielder. While Gary Neville and Ian Wright were full of admiration for the 22-year-old’s performances, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was less than enthusiastic.
Since arriving at Liverpool from Bayern Munich for £34.3 million, Gravenberch has taken on the role of a holding midfielder under new coach Arne Slot, surprising many with his consistency and dominance in midfield.
On The Overlap, Gary Neville described Gravenberch as one of the season’s biggest surprises:
“I feel quite strongly that Gravenberch is a massive surprise in how well he’s played at the start of the season. I don’t think anyone expected him to be as good as he has been in that position.”

Keane’s dismissive tone suggested that he saw Gravenberch’s displays as merely meeting expectations, not exceeding them.

Wright and Neville believe Gravenberch’s rise has saved Liverpool a fortune and injected new energy into their midfield. As Wright put it:
“They may still go for another holding midfielder, but you don’t get Zubimendi and then end up with him playing there like he has.”
