Ian Wright: 'This Manchester United star Can thrive for United, But I Don’t See this other one Succeeding Under Amorim'

Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund is seen by Ian Wright as a potential key player for Rúben Amorim’s title aspirations in the Premier League.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has shared his views on the changes happening at Manchester United under their new manager, Rúben Amorim. With Sir Jim Ratcliffe now owning the club, fans are hoping that Amorim will help guide United back to success. As Amorim settles in, he will be looking closely at each player to see who fits into his plans and who may not.

On his podcast, Wrighty’s House, Ian Wright spoke highly of United’s young striker, Rasmus Højlund, seeing him as someone who can help push the team toward the Premier League title and Champions League qualification. Wright said Højlund has strong instincts in front of the goal and can improve even more with good players around him. He described Højlund as the kind of striker who, with experience and confidence, could “go hot” and score many goals for United.

“When I watch Manchester United’s strikers, Højlund stands out,” Wright said. “He’s the one who could lift United to the next level, especially if the team is built around his skills.”

While Højlund received praise, Wright was less confident about Joshua Zirkzee, another United striker. Based on what he’s seen, Wright doesn’t believe Zirkzee has shown enough to become a top player for United. He feels Zirkzee’s positioning and movements don’t have the sharpness needed for a striker at this level.

“I don’t see Zirkzee making it at United,” Wright said. “He doesn’t have that quality that says, ‘top-four or title challenger.’ But I do see that potential in Højlund.”

Wright explained that, while Zirkzee has skill, he hasn’t shown the consistency needed to succeed at a big club like United. Wright believes that if United are serious about challenging for titles, they’ll need to look for other options in the striker position.

Even though he’s impressed with Højlund, Wright thinks United still need to add another top striker to compete at the highest level. He mentioned Marcus Rashford as an option for the central striker role but added that having more than one reliable goal-scorer is essential for United.

“United need a proven goal-scorer,” Wright said. “Even with Højlund, they need more strength up front to compete with the best teams.”

The three-at-the-back formation that Amorim is known for may require United’s players to adapt. To see who can adjust, he will be closely observing Højlund, Zirkzee, and others. According to Wright, Zirkzee might find it difficult to adjust to this style because he still needs to demonstrate his ability to score goals on a regular basis.

“Zirkzee has to show more if he wants a place in this team,” Wright stated. “There’s still time, but he needs to step up soon.”
