Manchester City Break Manchester United’s Champions League Unbeaten Record with impressive Win
Pep Guardiola’s side surpasses Manchester United’s 25-game unbeaten run in the Champions League after a 5-0 victory over Sparta Prague, setting a new record of 26 games unbeaten.
Manchester City’s impressive 5-0 victory over Sparta Prague at the Etihad Stadium officially ended Manchester United’s famous Champions League unbeaten record. The 25-game record achieved by their cross-town rivals, Manchester United, between 2007 and 2009, has been broken by City, under Pep Guardiola, to become the team with the longest unbeaten record in UEFA Champions League history.
Despite losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League last season, City managed to go 26 games without a loss. City lost on penalties after drawing 3-3 in the first leg in Madrid and 1-1 in the second leg in Manchester in a memorable quarterfinal match. But in extra time, UEFA declares both legs draws, maintaining City’s perfect record in the competition.
The previous record for Manchester United was achieved between September 2007 and May 2009, when Sir Alex Ferguson’s team won the 2007–08 Champions League trophy in Moscow after a close victory against Chelsea. When United lost 2-0 to Barcelona in the 2009 final in Rome, their run came to an end.
City’s unbeaten record has further strengthened their place among Europe’s most dominant teams. In the 2023–24 season, Guardiola’s team won the Champions League trophy as part of their historic Treble, which also included FA Cup and Premier League titles. With wins and draws against some of the best teams in Europe, the current run proved City’s dedication and consistency on the continent.
With their most recent victory, City not only broke Manchester United’s Champions League record, but they also set a new record in all UEFA competitions. City has now gone 27 games without a loss in UEFA competitions, including its 2023 Super Cup title. This surpasses Espanyol’s previous record of 26, which was set between 2006 and 2019.
In their official report, UEFA praised City’s success in their official report: “With tonight’s victory, Manchester City have set a new UEFA competition matches record of 27 games unbeaten. This passes Espanyol’s previous mark of 26, achieved between 2006 and 2019, with City having last been beaten in a UEFA fixture by Real Madrid in May 2022.”
